Who is More Dangerous? Bear vs. Man? Here’s the Only Correct Answer

Updated: May 29, 2024

There will be no opinions here: just facts, read them below:

What are the odds of a bear mauling you? It's a slim 1 in 2.1 million. Yup, you're more likely to get clobbered by a meteor or zapped by lightning. But hey, let's toss in the whole zoo: sharks take out six folks a year, lions chomp down on 200, and crocodiles nab around 1,000. Still, that's chump change compared to the 89,000 women who die each year at the hands of men.

But hey, maybe we’re nitpicking here, what if it wasn’t a stranger? But a familiar face you could trust? It’s not all men, right? More than half of the 89,000 deaths came from intimate partners or family members. In fact, more than five women are killed every hour by someone in their family. Crunching the numbers, a woman is 236.6 times more likely to die at the hands of a man than a bear.

But let's entertain a fantasy where your odds of getting killed are zero. Are you out of the woods? Not quite. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women will be raped at some point. And guess what? Only 18% of rape cases get reported, so that number's probably higher. Feeling safe yet?

There’s no argument here: a woman is safer with the bear than a man. But even if it wasn’t (because the worst-case scenario with a man is more survivable than the worst-case scenario with a bear), the fact that there’s debate about this already proves the point of the question, which is the fact that men are unpredictably dangerous.

This knowledge, however, should not be a license to indiscriminately hate all men. Instead, it should serve as a warning to always be cautious, even if you’re a man yourself.

Remember: “not all men, but always a man.”
